What’s Diwali

Deepavali or Diwali, popularly known as the “festival of lights,” is a five-day Hindu festival[3] which starts on Dhanteras, celebrated on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna paksha (dark fortnight) of the Hindu calendar month Ashwin and ends on Bhaubeej, celebrated on second lunar day of Shukla paksha of the Hindu calendar month Kartik. Dhanteras usually falls eighteen days after Dussehra. In the Gregorian calendar, Diwali falls between mid-October and mid-November.

Our Mission & Vision

The Sussex Indian Punjabi Society (SIPS for short) was formed in May 1997 in Brighton & Hove and surrounding areas by members of the local Indian Punjabi community.

The group was formed to help connect the Indian Punjabi community and to ensure younger members were exposed to our culture, history and values.

Hence the Aim’s of SIPS are to: –

  • Serve and inspire our communities
  • Improve social well-being of its community
  • Promote awareness of Indian Punjabi culture, its history and values
  • Connect the local Indian Punjabi community through events and help enrich the lives of our members and the wider community.
  • Organise exciting cultural events, which form an integral part of the Indian Punjabi calendar: For example Vaisakhi in April and Diwali in November.
  • Encourage younger members to come forward and join us to develop the future whilst appreciating and enjoying our culture and cuisine.
  • Build cohesion with all local organisations whilst supporting charitable causes and organisations locally and nationally as appropriate.

We have formal designated officers such as Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary etc, but this was not the case in its early setup. Our aim is not to build up bank balance. Each function should breakeven financially and there is no annual membership fee. Each & everyone is welcome to our society’s functions (provided they purchase tickets in advance which are available in advance of all of our events).

Since those early days our functions have grown in popularity and we are proud that our functions are now an integral & important part of the local Indian community’s calendar. We are open to anyone who wants to help us organise our functions.

So come along and join us at our next exciting event!
