Dear Friends of the Chattri
On behalf of the Chattri Memorial Group, I should like to invite you to a Memorial Service, in remembrance of the Indian Soldiers who were cremated in Brighton during the First World War. Some 12,000 troops were brought over from the Western Front and hospitalised in Brighton to recover from their wounds. . The memorial is unique and the commemoration is believed to be the only one of its kind in Britain.
As you are aware, 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War and is therefore, a significant milestone in our homage to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on our behalf. The Service will take place on Sunday 10th June 2018 at 2.30 pm. at the Chattri, Patcham, Standen Lane, Brighton, BN1 8ZB. Prayers and the laying of the wreaths should last for approximately half an hour. Cars are able to drive right up to the Chattri across the fields on this day. However, seating is limited and if required, please bring your own foldable chair. There are no facilities available, nor any cover at the venue. Everyone is most welcome.
Following the Ceremony, refreshments will be served at Dorothy Stringer School, Loder Road, BN1 6PZ in the Cafe from 3.45 p.m. An exhibition which traces the role of the soldiers from India to the Western Front will be on display at the school.
I shall be deeply honoured to have your presence at the Chattri and I hope you be able to attend with your family and friends.
I would be very grateful if you would kindly pass on this email to your contacts.
There is no need to reply, unless you intend to lay a wreath on behalf of your organisation. Please note, we are unable to provide wreaths.
NOTE: The Order of Service for the day can be downloaded from the website: chattri.org
With best wishes
